The official ribbon-cutting ceremony on the afternoon of Sunday, November 18, 2012, marked the re-opening of the Historic Pony Bridge. However, the highlight of the day was the announcement of David Heintzelman as the local businessman whose generous donation allowed the Historical Society to purchase materials and hire a contractor to assist members and community volunteers with the repairs to the bridge.
Then HHS President Earl Hill welcomed guests gathered at the entrance to the Pony Bridge and offered sincere thanks of the Organization and the Community to Mr. Heintzelman. Two additional contributions from contractor Mark Repsher and Sam Donato of IESE were also acknowledged.
Then Board of Directors member Dianne Borovies presented a historical timeline of the Pony Bridge from 1860 to the present. She explained the donated funds facilitated the replacement of rotting red oak flooring and support beams with longer-lasting white oak.
The event then concluded with the ribbon-cutting by Mr. Hill and Mr. Heintzelman, allowing the guests to take the first stroll across the newly re-opened bridge then onto a social gathering in the Historic Tavern Room. In the Tavern Room, guests viewed photos and memorabilia of the Pony Bridge history and enjoyed light refreshments. The Historical Society also wishes to thank Jan Doddy, of Doddy Photography, for donating his services and recording the day’s events.
